Statement of Need

The National registry of Certified Medical Examiners was established in accordance with the final rule published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA) in the Federal Register on April 20, 2012. This rule requires that all medical examiners (ME) who conduct physical examinations for interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers:

  • Maintain a valid state license to conduct medical examinations;
  • Register with the National Registry and receive a unique National Registry number
  • Complete the training on FMSCA’s physical qualifications standards;
  • Pass the ME Certification Test to demonstrate a sound understanding of FMSCA’s physical qualification standards; and
  • Complete periodic training and recertification testing.


Learning Objectives

At the end of this CME activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Perform physical exams on CMV drivers in accordance to the FMCSA Regulations and Guidelines.
  2. Apply the FMSCA driver physical qualification standards, medical guidance and advisory criteria when determining medical fitness for duty in the CMV driver.
